O.K. i see what you mean. Yes i remember Australia playing
Uruguay.
Exactly there is just no one to test us in oceania.
We are creaming it with age group and womens with Oceania at the
mo
if your wanting to get thrashed 4-0 each game go for it!
This will only happen initially. Look at the example of South Korea - stuffed 9-0 in their first World Cup, but after the door opened for Asia, 6 consecutive tournaments has seen them become competitive. Continual exposure to higher levels will lead to improved standards in NZ and Oceania. I'm in favour of merging Asia and Oceania, rather than NZ jumping ship and leaving the rest of Oceania. The splitting of West Asia and East Asia + Oceania makes a lot of sense.
And we need to see some variety on the pitch. I'm damned sick and
tired of watching most of our internationals being played via the
back four who can quite adequately pass the ball across the park to
each other - but where is the forward motion? The attacking
side needs to be worked on. I'd rather support an attack minded All
Whites than an All White side hell bend on a defence first
approach.
I believe we should just hold tight for now and continue to ensure
our age group teams are winning their OFC tournaments and we start
building up the funds we earn from making it to FIFA tournaments.
The game here needs dollars, money we can get most readily and
easily by winning these OFC tournaments, including the biggy - the
O-League. Without money the game ain't going to move
anywhere.
no.
I dont think NZ will get into Asia without dragging the rest of Oceania with us unless we win each game in Oceania Quals by big margins, in which case if we were to move on Oceania would most likely close and create a tier 2 Asia qualifier system.
it would be nice to see the top kiwi club/s qualify for the Asian club champs...
FIFA will tell Oceania what to do and where to go.
However, if we were to leave the OFC confederation I'd prefer to
join the South American Confederation, playing Uruguay, Brazil,
Chile, Argentina, Venezuela, Columbia, Peru etc. These are far
better sides to be playing and the more we play them the more we
can develop an entertaining style of play and player.
That's a good idean and I think NZ football, OFC, and FIFA really need to consider it. It actually is a genius idea. Only problem is it would be geographically incorrect if Australia is part of AFC and some of the countries to the North of Australia (who are closer to the mainland of Asia) are in OFC. Maybe we should take the Phillipines, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, AND Australia to save confusion.
Should New Zealand join the Asian Confederation?
Should New Zealand join the Asian Confederation?
lots of pros and cons.some of mine:
pros:
-great for the pheonix to join the acl comp
-national team will play the socceroos more often in important
games
cons:
-may be a harder task for the national team to make the world
cup. playing against the 5th best South american side may be an
easier task to qualify, than competing against some of the stronger
asian teams.
-playing against the solomon islands is great fun!
discuss........
no they shouldnt caz they not asia, simple as that.
I'd love NZ to join Asia, as the higher quality of the
confederation has only got to be good for the game in NZ long term.
We aren't asia, but then neither are the
Aussies, and there are plenty of blonde heads in the some of
the central Asian sides (all the .........stans).
I actually wonder if Asia needs to be cut in two - Central
Asia and the Middle East in one confederation, South & East
Asia and the Pacific in the other.
Of course I'd expect that the most likely best outcome would
be that the confederations stay as they are, but the top
Oceania team joins the Asian qualifying process at
some point.

That's not an argument. .. Australia are part of the
Asian Confederation. . . And besides, all they need to do is
rename it if that would make you happy to Asia/ Pacific or
something like that.
I think joining Asia would be the best thing for NZ football.
More regular international matches of a superior quality. Greater
revenues, bigger crowds, opportunities for our players to get
exposed to coaches/ scouts from bigger clubs, conferderation club
championships. ... . the list goes on.
I agree. They should maybe look at unifying the two and call
is Asia/Pacific as you mentioned. It would get the national
team better games against stronger teams.
I mean come on as metioned before playing teams like Solomon Island and Tahiti does get a little boring.
Thoughts????

Maybe if we jumped we might get good. . ..
Regular games, regular income, more exposure to quality, home games
would attract more punters, than say Chile v NZ. Still, there
is a small but growing number of South Americans in Auckland,
mainly students at Uni.of Auckland's Business School which is
accredited in the Americas, Europe, UK.
The one-off play off is unhelpful to improving our game.
still werenot gonna get any better by stayin in oceania if we move
to asia we will develop better skills
Nor is australia.
Yes lets do it in my mind Asia and oceania should just merge

if you remember a few years back, the socceroos (top oceania
team) played uruguay (5th SM team) to qualify for the world cup.

I think we should join Asia. Will be a great for us long suffering
AW's fans to see good quality matches at home. Sure, it will be
harder to reach the WC, but I would prefer to see a
few good games every year than hold out for a spot in the WC
every 30 or 40 years.
I think we should join Asia
I think Oceania should become a sub group of Asia - so the winner
of Oceania then goes into the later rounds of Asian qualifying -
whether that'sWorld Cup or whatever.

I'm not particularly enthused by the more
"English" concepts of playing football that we tend to hold
close. Grit and determination only carry you so far, we need to be
seeing technically proficient and skilled individuals making it.
And we need to see some variety on the pitch. I'm damned sick and

Here, here!
No, in Wales and Ukraine...
Good Point! We should reap some rewards with the current
structure and it should give youth players a lot of reason to stick
and football with these current opportunities.
It must be a bit of headache for FIFA to deal with this whole
Oceana region. I am sure they will be monitoring our progress. If
we don't start performing or the region doesn't grow stronger they
will make a change. I think what they are really doing is trying to
promote the game in the Islands. FIFA would have loved for an
island team to have qualified for u17,19 or youth womans. And to be
fair, those islands would have got behind their teams with some
passion and pride.
Longshot, but well see.
no.
Look at the simple facts, age group teams at youth world cups,
women at senior world cups.
The men are getting quality fixtures now anyways and at the
moment we get to play off the 6th placed Asian team for the w. cup.
Would we make the top 6, no, this way its a one off game to glory,
and anything can happen on a one off.
Youth w. cups are to important to loose, why do you think so
many aussies are now overseas????
go oceania
Nah keep out of there so we can get beaten by fiji or the solomnons
again
Look at the simple facts, age group teams at youth world cups,

I reckon stay for as long as Oceania has direct entry to the
youth and women world cups. These opportunities are too good to
pass up.
We probably have a reasonable show of qualifying at mens'
level with a 1 off playoff with an Asian side. From the
perspective of getting more quality games it would be great if the
Oceania winner went into something like the Asian Top 10 playoffs
with the top teams qualifying for the WC.
At the end of the day it will alld epend on what FIFA decides
to do with Oceania I think. We will end up doing what we are
told.
You should definately go into Asia.
You will see the rewards in 5 years time.
First of all when the A-League introduces its youth league in
V4 or 5 you will have the best youth team by far, you will have the
whole under 21 squad that is based in NZ pretty much and once they
develope in 5 years you guys will strike gold in my opinion.
In asia you guys will get much more money through sponsership
and you will play more games. I think if you had a full squad you
would be competetive in Asia. The more money you guys get, the more
players will come back to get player appearence fees like Mulligan,
Killeen etc when you play.
FIFA will tell Oceania what to do and where to go.

Agree with you lets keep in the Oceania and see if we can lift
our standard and get really good. then if can beat the likes of
Fiji and the solomons often enough they will surely have to give us
some consideration re: Asia or our own spot (Not Likely). We have
struggled against these teams recently so lets wait and see
That might be cool, but there is no way CONMEBOL would allow
it, considering how there are three countries (the guyanas) that
are geographically IN south america but playing as members of
CONCACAF. CONMEBOL loves the idea of being the only confederation
in which any country can plausibly qualify for a world cup, and
only one hasn't to date. They're not about to start admitting new
members.
I do however have a wild crazy idea for the OFC to gain some
oomph though. Consider how the AFC has nearly 60 member nations,
most of which are quite weak. If the OFC were to "steal" some
weaker AFC members that are geographically close to oceania, such
as Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and the Phillipines,
then the confederation would get a nice boost just by increasing
its size. Also, this would be the kind of thing that would grab a
little much-needed publicity for the OFC. Think of the headlines.
"The Little Confederation that Could: OFC Announces Free-Agent
Signings". It would be a media darling.
But how would the OFC pull off such a daring move? Well,
it's been mentioned in this thread already - relatively easy world
cup qualification routes. Two of the afforementioned nations
(Phillipines and Brunei) didn't even enter world cup qualifying
this time around because asia is simply above their heads, so they
don't even bother to try. But with a smaller, less powerful route,
they just might be inclined to try, and push the OFC to a slightly
higher level. It may not be much but it will be a start and it will
surely get FIFA's attention, and will definitely give them some
more leverage towards an easier qualifying route (as opposed
to the current oceania/south america playoff). Before you know it,
Australia will want back in. Then we'll really have
something.
Well, a man can dream.
if we do join asia, then the welingtons could play in that asia
champions league instead of the o-league.
BUT that would mean that australians would be classified as
foreign players
i hope u kiwis arent gonna turn asian? theres to many of them
already.. just check the fish and chip shop
I agree with your post, Proak
Instead of us playing the 4/5th place South American team,
winning Oceania should place us in with the Asian qualifiers for
the World Cup.
I'd personally be in favour on joining Asia, we need as many
games as we can get & the 2-2 draw with the Welsh (with a
patched up team) shows we can compete & need the big games to
improve.
My 2c
Go the Phoenix!!!!

id love to see a recount of the votes, once you kiwi's watch the
asian cup.
or maybe playing against american samoa tickles you
fancy!
New Zealand should stay for the auto-qual for womens and youth
WC
But moving to asia could be better long term.
